Wat Intharawat (Wat Ton Kwen)

Hang Dong · Hang Dong / Nam Phrae

About

Wat Ton Kwen is one of the best-preserved old Lanna temples around Chiang Mai, and it's worth the ride out to Hang Dong if you care about the architecture more than the gold. The buildings date from the mid-1800s, under Chiang Mai ruler Kawilorot: a timber-framed prayer hall with a stepped tiled roof, a covered gallery around it, and a four-porch pavilion said to be the only one of its kind in the north. It was once the last stop for the Chom Thong relic procession before it entered the city. It was registered as a historic site in 1983 and won a conservation award from the Association of Siamese Architects in 1989.
