About
The Sticky Waterfall in Mae Taeng is the one waterfall near Chiang Mai you climb rather than look at. The spring water above it is rich in calcium carbonate, which leaves a rough mineral crust on the rock, and it grips bare feet well enough that you can walk straight up the cascades. The pale rock is the grippy part, and the dark green patches are algae, as slippery as anywhere. At the top, a short walk brings you to Nam Phu Chet Si, the clear 'seven-colour' spring that feeds it, which is a sacred site. It's about 60 km north, so plan on a half day.
